Ellor, James
1819 - 1899
James Ellor United Kingdom 1819-1899. Born at Droylesden, Lancashire, England, he was trained as a hat maker. By age 18 he was leading the Methodist Wesleyan Chapel choir. He later worked for the railroad. In 1838 he brought his choir a new tune he had written for the hymn, “All hail the power of Jesus' name”. It became well received and has been used with the hymn ever since. In 1843 he emigrated to America and resumed the hat making trade. He died in New York City. It is the only hymn he is now remembered for.
